Mikaela Shiffrin burst onto the scene in 2012. She was also 16, but Shiffrin has become a Slalom phenonm. She is the best slalom skier in the World. It took her only 5 races to reach the podium and she has been winning left and right ever since.
Shffrin is from Colorado and at 21 years old she already has 3 Slalom World Titles and she has an Olympic Gold Medal in slalom from the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games. Shiffrin began skiing in her driveway right about the time she could walk. Her whole family is a skiing family and she attended Burke Mountain Academy, which is a Ski Race boarding school. She was born to be a ski racer.
No one has ever been quite as dominiant in slalom so quickly as Mikaela Shiffrin. Last season she won a race in Aspen by 3 seconds. In ski racing that is an ETERNITY. She said after the race that it would never be done again. The next day she won another slalom race by 2 seconds.
As with everything in her career she takes her time and aproaches it methodically. She wants to be the best and she knows you can’t just jump into a discipline and be the best. She started off only competing in slalom and then moved into giant slalom. This past season she tried her hand at Super G for the first time and finished as high as 15.
Her season was interuptted with an MCL tear that occured in a warm up run for a giant slalom race that took her out for eight weeks. She decided not to do any more Super G that year and focus on the technical events.
Now Shiffrin is poised to dominiate slalom once again and if she gains enough points in slalom and giant slalom and also does some super G races then she could be a real contender for the Overall Title.
